A Walking Quiz (Treasure Hunt) by the Exe

To give some variation to our usual walk, Tricia organised a Tresure Hunt for this Sunday.   After assembling by the Custom House on the Quay, we split into teams, were furnished with our cluesheet, and eagerly set off - one team a bit too eagerly, for we overshot the location of the first 6 clues!

Soon we got into our stride and continued, more successfully this time.  Our route took us over the footbridge to the Haven Banks side of the river, then eastwards to Piazza Terracina and the Maritime Museum.   After searching for a batch of clues here we continued along the river bank to Kings Arms Sluice and the start of the Exeter Canal, back again and then further east past the Flood Relief Channel.   Over another bridge and then we crossed to the north side of the river on the Trews Weir Suspension Bridge, near Belle Isle.

Our route then led us away from the river for a short distance through a residential area before we re-emerged on the riverside path, and the answers to some more clues.  Now heading north-west, we passed The Port Royal pub before returning to the Quayside, first passing the arched cellars, then the tall warehouses that, we discovered, date from 1834-5, and then back to our start point.

The afternoon was rounded off by tea at the Riverside Cafe in the sun, scoring the teams' results and the giving of prizes.  Our thanks go to Tricia for the time and effort put into devising the hunt and double checking the clues - a probably more time-consuming task than finding a suitable walk.

There is no track to upload for today, but about 2.7 miles was covered.
